What things cost in Pattaya, and the scams to know about

Pattaya can be one of the cheapest places you have ever had a good time, or a surprisingly expensive one, and the difference is rarely about how much you spend. It is about knowing how the pricing works.

This guide gives no specific figures. Prices change, quoted numbers date badly, and a guide that tells you what a beer cost eighteen months ago is worse than one that tells you how the system operates.

The single rule that governs everything

Price is a function of distance from the sea.

The same bottle of beer, the same plate of food, the same massage costs dramatically more on the beachfront than two streets inland. Not slightly more. Often several times more.

This is not dishonesty. It is rent, and it is the same anywhere in the world. But the gradient here is unusually steep, and it means the single most effective money-saving habit in Pattaya is to walk two streets back.

Do that and everything else on this page becomes marginal.

Where the real value is

Thai food from small kitchens and markets. The cheapest good food in the city by a very wide margin. Pad Lay off Soi Buakhao is the model: no atmosphere, excellent cooking, prices that make no sense.

Night market food. Thepprasit and Jomtien both have food sections offering a proper meal for a fraction of restaurant prices.

Mall food courts. Pier 21 at Terminal 21 is genuinely one of the best-value meals in the city, and it uses a prepaid card system: top up at a counter, spend at the stalls, refund the balance on the way out.

Seafood bought raw. At Lan Pho market in Naklua you buy from the stalls and pay a kitchen at the back to cook it. Cheaper and fresher than any seafood restaurant.

Massage and haircuts. Both are excellent value at ordinary neighbourhood shops.

Transport. Baht buses on their fixed routes cost very little.

Domestic beer and spirits. Thai-produced drinks are cheap. Imported wine and spirits carry heavy duty and are not.

Where the money goes without you noticing

Imported food and drink. Western groceries, imported cheese, wine and spirits are expensive by any standard.

Beachfront anything. See the rule above.

Attractions with layered pricing. Several of the larger attractions charge separately for elements that feel like they should be included. Decide what you are buying at the counter rather than inside the gate.

Water sports. The single fastest way to turn a cheap beach day into an expensive one.

Hotel extras. Minibar, laundry, and airport transfers arranged through the hotel desk all carry a substantial premium.

ATM fees. Thai ATMs charge a fixed fee per foreign withdrawal on top of whatever your own bank charges. Fewer, larger withdrawals cost less than frequent small ones.

Exchanging money

Dedicated currency exchange booths consistently offer better rates than banks, hotels and airports. The well-known ones in central Pattaya are competitive with each other, and the difference on a meaningful amount is worth a five-minute walk.

Airport exchange rates are the worst you will see. Change a small amount on arrival to get to your hotel, and the rest in town.

The scams worth knowing about

None of these are new, all of them still work, and all of them are avoidable.

Jet skis

The most notorious, and the one that causes real trouble.

The pattern: you rent a jet ski, return it, and are then presented with damage you did not cause and a demand for a large sum, sometimes with intimidation attached.

How to avoid it. Photograph and video the entire machine from every angle before you get on it, slowly, in front of the operator. Anyone reluctant to let you do that is telling you something. Consider whether you need one at all.

If it happens, involve the tourist police rather than negotiating alone.

The gem shop

An old scam that persists because it works.

The pattern: a friendly stranger, sometimes presenting as an official or a well-dressed local, mentions a special one-day-only government gem sale or a duty-free promotion. A tuk-tuk driver takes you there. The stones are worth a fraction of what you pay and are effectively impossible to resell.

How to avoid it. There is no government gem sale. There never is. Do not buy gemstones from anywhere you were taken rather than chose.

The closed attraction

The pattern: you are heading somewhere and a helpful person tells you it is closed today for a holiday or a ceremony, and offers an alternative destination instead. The alternative involves a shop.

How to avoid it. Check for yourself. Major attractions are rarely closed, and someone volunteering that information unprompted has a reason.

Taxi and baht bus pricing

Not a scam so much as a system visitors misread.

A baht bus running its normal fixed route is cheap and the fare is fixed. The same vehicle, if you engage the driver and ask to be taken somewhere specific, becomes a private hire at a negotiated rate that can be many times higher.

How to avoid it. Get in the back, ride the loop, press the buzzer, pay at the window. Do not talk to the driver about where you are going. For anything off the routes, use a ride-hailing app, which fixes the price in advance.

Scooter rental deposits

Covered in more detail in our driving guide, but briefly: photograph the bike thoroughly before riding away, and do not leave your passport as a deposit. Offer cash or a photocopy.

Bar bill padding

Uncommon in reputable venues, and worth watching in the busier tourist areas. Check the bill, and be aware that VAT and service charge are added at some venues and not others without much warning.

"Free" tickets and timeshare

If someone on the street is offering you something free in exchange for attending a presentation, the presentation is the product.

Tourist police

Thailand has a dedicated tourist police service with English-speaking officers, and they exist precisely for these situations. If a dispute escalates beyond a disagreement, particularly one involving intimidation or a demand for money, that is the number to call rather than trying to resolve it alone.

Budgeting, in shape rather than in numbers

Rather than quote figures that will date, here is the shape.

Accommodation is the largest variable and ranges enormously by area and season. Low season rates are dramatically below high season for identical rooms.

Food can be almost nothing or substantial, entirely depending on whether you eat Thai or Western. This is the single biggest lever on a daily budget.

Transport is cheap if you use baht buses and apps, and expensive if you use hotel cars.

Drink is cheap if domestic, expensive if imported, and multiplied by proximity to the sea.

Activities are where budgets break, because they are the irregular items: the island day, the water sports, the attraction with add-ons.

The honest summary

Pattaya rewards paying attention and punishes assuming.

The city is genuinely cheap for anyone eating local food, drinking local drinks, using local transport and staying slightly back from the beach. It is comparable to a European resort for anyone doing the opposite.

Neither is wrong. But it is worth knowing which trip you are on, because the same fortnight can cost wildly different amounts depending on a handful of habits.

Paying for things

Cash is still king for markets, small kitchens, baht buses and neighbourhood shops. Cards work in malls, larger restaurants and hotels.

Thai QR payment is used everywhere by residents and is increasingly the default for Thai customers, though it generally requires a Thai bank account.

Keep small notes. Vendors early in the day frequently cannot change a large note, and it is genuinely inconvenient for them rather than a tactic.

Check your change in busy places, not because of dishonesty but because Thai banknotes of different values look more similar than many currencies.

VAT refunds

Foreign visitors can reclaim VAT on qualifying purchases from participating shops, which in practice means the malls and department stores rather than markets.

You need to ask for the form at the point of sale, carry your passport, and process the claim at the airport on departure. It is worth doing on a substantial purchase and not worth the queue on a small one.

Tipping

Not obligatory anywhere in Thailand, widely practised in tourist areas, and appreciated everywhere.

Restaurants: rounding up, or leaving small change. Check whether a service charge has already been added.

Massage and spa: normal, given directly to the therapist.

Taxis and baht buses: rounding up.

Hotel staff: small notes for porters and housekeeping.

If something goes wrong

Tourist police have English-speaking officers and exist for exactly these situations. Save the number.

Your embassy for anything involving loss of documents, arrest or serious injury.

Bangkok Hospital Pattaya for medical problems, open around the clock with direct billing to most travel insurers.

Document everything. Photographs, receipts, names, times. Almost every dispute is easier to resolve with a record than without one.

The single most useful behaviour in any dispute here is to stay calm and be persistent. Raising your voice ends the conversation. Smiling and asking again does not.
