Pad Lay
Ambitious Thai stir-fries in a room with barely any tables.
Why we recommend it
A tiny kitchen turning out seafood-heavy Thai food with more creativity than the setting suggests, and one of the highest-rated ratings-to-volume records in the city.
Our review
Do not judge it by the seating. This is home-style Thai cooking scaled up in ambition rather than price: river prawns, mussels, squid, scallops and crab turning up in dishes you will not find at the tourist end of Beach Road. Portions are generous, service is fast, and there is no atmosphere to speak of, which is entirely the point. Opens early afternoon and runs late.
