Pool and snooker in Pattaya

Pattaya has quietly become one of the better cue sports cities in Southeast Asia, and almost nobody outside the local scene knows it.

There are rooms here with Diamond and Predator tables, tournaments drawing three-figure fields, halls open twenty-four hours, and enough bar tables that you are never more than a few minutes from a game. For a city better known for other things, the standard is genuinely high.

Why here

Two reasons, and they compound.

Thailand has a serious snooker tradition. The country has produced world-ranked professionals, snooker is widely followed, and there is a domestic playing culture that has nothing to do with tourism.

On top of that, Pattaya has a large resident foreign population with time, disposable income and a cultural attachment to pub games. Put those together and you get demand for both English-style snooker and American pool, which is why the rooms here cover formats you rarely find under one roof.

The result is a scene with genuine depth: serious halls at the top, bar tables everywhere, and a competition calendar that runs year-round.

The serious rooms

Double Kiss Pool and Sports Lounge in Nong Prue is the one competitive players talk about. The room has been improved steadily over years rather than opened and left alone, with more tables added and everything recloth, and it is split between Diamond tables on one side and Predator on the other.

That matters if you play properly. If you do not, it simply means every table in the building is a good one. The tournament scene here is the real distinction, with large-field events that fill the place, and they are worth watching even if you are not entered. There are restaurants attached and service is quick. Drinks are where the bill adds up.

S1 Pool Hall & Sport Bar is the most complete games room in the city and the only serious one open around the clock. Pool, snooker, darts and table tennis under one roof, equipment in good order, and a management team that will advise a beginner or leave a competent player alone.

The detail worth knowing: if you turn up alone, the staff will give you a game. That is a rarer and more generous thing than it sounds, and it makes this the best room in the city for a solo visitor. There is a separate signature snooker club under the same ownership.

MEGABREAK is the long-established room with nine-foot tables, a good stock of house cues and a competition scene that regulars plan their week around. The tables are properly maintained. Drinks cost more than they would next door, which is the trade for the room. Opening hours vary across the week, with some days afternoon and some evening-only, so check before making the trip.

IQ Club on Pattaya Klang has the most varied table selection anywhere locally: American pool, English pool, Chinese eight-ball and full snooker, plus three darts oches. Tables are cleaned between customers, cues and chalk provided, and it is a quieter proposition than the tournament halls, which suits a casual afternoon.

The formats, briefly

Worth knowing, because the rooms here offer all of them and they are not interchangeable.

American pool is played on a smaller table with larger balls and generous pockets, usually nine-ball or eight-ball. Fast, aggressive, and the most common format in the halls here.

English pool uses smaller balls, tighter pockets and a smaller table, with a heavier emphasis on safety play. The pub game most British visitors grew up with.

Snooker is the full-size game on a twelve-foot table, and it is a different sport. Longer frames, finer margins, and the format with the deepest following in Thailand.

Chinese eight-ball, or heyball, has grown enormously across Asia in recent years and has its own professional circuit. It uses American-size balls on an English-style table, and IQ Club is where to try it.

If you have only played one of these, trying another here costs almost nothing and is genuinely interesting.

The competitions

This is what separates Pattaya from a city that merely has pool tables.

Both Double Kiss and MEGABREAK run regular competitions, and the larger events at Double Kiss draw fields in the hundreds and attract players from across Thailand and beyond. There are handicapped events for club players and open events for the serious ones.

If you are a competent player visiting for a week or more, entering something is entirely realistic and is by far the fastest way into the local scene. Ask at the desk, or check the venue's social media, since schedules are announced there rather than anywhere permanent.

If you are not entering, watching a large event is a good evening in itself.

Bar tables

Beyond the dedicated halls, a great many bars here have a table, and several are worth seeking out.

Daisy D's on Jomtien Beach Road has free, well-maintained tables at the back, which makes it the best value in the city. Combined with a sports board covering most major leagues and opening hours from seven in the morning, it is the natural all-day room.

The Stables out on the east side has a well-kept table in a genuinely comfortable room, with proper air conditioning and a non-smoking interior.

Hemingways in Jomtien has a good table at the back of an English pub layout with air conditioning that copes.

Around Lake Mabprachan, My Bar, Pat's Bar and Outback all have tables in constant use, and the lake bars are the most pleasant place in the city to play in the late afternoon.

Practical notes

Table hire is usually by the hour, and rates vary between the dedicated halls and the bar tables, which are sometimes free and sometimes coin-operated. Ask before you rack up.

Cues. House cues are provided everywhere and the better halls have genuinely playable ones. Serious players bring their own, and nobody minds.

Etiquette is much the same as anywhere: winner stays on where that convention applies, coins or names on the table to reserve the next game, and do not walk across someone's line while they are down on a shot.

Air conditioning is the practical differentiator in this climate. The dedicated halls all have it. Some bar tables are in open-air rooms, which is fine in the evening and punishing at two in the afternoon.

Smoking. Thai law restricts indoor smoking, and enforcement varies. If it matters to you, ask, or check recent reviews.

Timing. Daytime and early afternoon is when tables are freely available. Weekend evenings are busy everywhere, and competition nights fill the serious rooms entirely.

If you play seriously

Bring your own cue, go to Double Kiss first, ask what is coming up, and enter something.

The scene here is welcoming, the standard is higher than you will expect, and the cost of playing on tournament-grade equipment is a fraction of what it would be at home.

If you just want a game

S1 at any hour, or Daisy D's in the afternoon. Both will look after you, and neither requires you to be any good.

Darts, which travels with the territory

Almost every room on this page has a darts board, and several have proper oches with multiple boards.

Pattaya has an active darts scene running alongside the cue sports one, with league nights and competitions in the sports bars. IQ Club has three oches, and S1 covers darts alongside everything else.

If darts is your game rather than pool, the same advice applies: ask at the desk what runs and when, because it is announced locally rather than published anywhere central.

Table tennis and the rest

S1 also has table tennis, which is genuinely rare in this city and worth knowing if you play.

Between pool, snooker, darts and table tennis under one roof and open around the clock, it is the most complete games venue in Pattaya by some distance.

Bringing your own cue

Entirely normal, and nobody will look twice.

A two-piece cue in a case travels easily in checked luggage. Airlines generally have no issue with it, though a cue will not go in hand luggage.

If you play seriously and are here for more than a few days, bring it. The house cues at the better halls are playable but they are not yours.

The social side

This is the underrated part.

Pool halls in Pattaya function as social clubs for a lot of the resident foreign population, and they are among the easiest places in the city to meet people without it being a drinking session. Turn up alone at S1 and someone will give you a game. Turn up at a competition night at Double Kiss and you will meet the local scene in an evening.

For anyone staying longer, or anyone travelling alone, that is worth more than the tables.

A note on cost

Table hire by the hour is inexpensive by any international standard, and it is not where the money goes.

Drinks are, particularly at the dedicated halls where prices sit above what you would pay in an ordinary bar. That is the trade for the equipment and the room, and it is worth knowing before a long session rather than after.

The bar tables in the pubs and the lake bars are the cheaper option, and several are free.
